If you have asked three people to quote the same website, you have probably received three numbers that look like they belong to different planets. The instinct is to assume someone is overcharging. Usually nobody is — you have been quoted for three different products that happen to share a name.
What the cheapest quote is really for
At the bottom of the range you are buying a template with your content poured into it. That is a legitimate product. It gets you online this week, it costs less than a phone, and for a business that needs an address on the internet rather than a machine that generates work, it is the correct choice.
What you are not buying is anything specific to you. The template was designed for a category, not a business. When you later want a booking flow, a second language, or a page that does something the template's author never imagined, the answer is frequently that it cannot be done without starting again.
What the expensive quote includes that the cheap one does not
- Design made for your content, not content squeezed into a design
- A performance budget — someone is accountable for how fast it loads on a mid-range phone on 4G
- Technical SEO that is structural rather than a plugin: real metadata, structured data, a sitemap that reflects the site
- Accessibility that would survive an audit
- A codebase another developer can read, so you are not locked to one person
- Someone answering the phone in month three
The price difference is rarely about hours. It is about how much of the risk moves from you to whoever built it.
How to compare quotes honestly
Ask every candidate the same four questions, and compare the answers rather than the totals. Who owns the code and the accounts at the end? What happens in month two when something breaks? What is explicitly excluded? And what would it cost to add the one feature you know is coming next year?
The fourth question is the one that separates them. A cheap build where every future change costs a rebuild is not cheap; it is a payment plan with the interest hidden at the end.
A reasonable frame
Under $500, expect a template. Between $900 and $2,000, expect a custom-designed site that is genuinely yours. Between $2,000 and $5,000, expect a product: accounts, payments, an admin someone on your team can actually operate. Above that you are commissioning a platform, and the conversation should be about architecture rather than pages.
